PRESS RELEASE

NJDSC CHAIR JONES ON VIRGINIA VICTORY: THE MOMENTUM TO TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY IS PALPABLE

TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman Leroy J. Jones, Jr. today released the following statement praising Virginia voters for yesterday’s “yes” vote on the referendum to approve a new congressional map.  This is the latest win in the ongoing fight to combat President Trump’s efforts to use every tool at his disposal, legally or illegally, to maintain control of the House of Representatives.

The new map, which could turn as many as four red seats in Virginia blue, is a direct response to the President’s push to create gerrymandered districts across the country to try and provide Republicans the advantage in the mid-term elections.  It comes even as Trump and MAGA Republicans continue to push for new maps in other parts of the country and are actively working to disenfranchise millions of voters with their “SAVE America Act”.

“I am so very proud to see Democrats everywhere continuing to step into this fight. We are long past the times of longing for the days of ‘normalcy’ and ‘protocols’ from this White House and this Congress and last night’s huge win in Virginia is just the latest example of what happens when we all work together and organize in support of common goals.

Here in New Jersey, we decided a long time ago that we would not sit back and wait for President Trump and MAGA Republicans to come and knock on our door.  Our Democratic Congressional delegation has been taking the fight to this President from day one and, in between Governor Mikie Sherrill’s historic win last November and Analilia Mejia’s thorough trouncing of her opponent last week, it is clear we will not cede an inch.

But fighting with no plan does not guarantee results.  That’s why, with Governor Sherrill leading the way, New Jersey has stood against President Trump at every turn with multiple lawsuits to block tariffs, deter plans to build an ICE detention center in Roxbury, and stop Trump from withholding construction on the Gateway tunnel while also passing a state order to restrict where federal immigration officials can make arrests.

What happened last night in Virginia is a huge win in the larger battle, but the fight goes on.  The momentum to take back our country is palpable, and now it is up to Democrats to bring it home this November.  Here in New Jersey, I know we will continue to do our part because we are working towards a common goal and we will never, ever back down.”
