Trenton, NJ — Residents of New Jersey’s Second Congressional District have long known they can’t trust Jeff Van Drew after he deceived voters running as a Democrat and capitulated to Donald Trump less than a year into his first term. Now, he’s at it again lying to his constituents about where he stands on Trump’s disastrous budget that includes the largest cut to health care and food assistance in American history.

February 2025: “South Jersey congressman wants assurances that Medicaid won’t be touched

  • “Before I would vote for this, I would want some commitments that we’re not going to touch Medicaid.” — Jeff Van Drew

May 2025: Van Drew, who has drawn red line on Medicaid cuts, says he too is largely satisfied with proposed bill

  • “He said [on May 13], though, that he thinks the cuts proposed under the bill are reasonable…”
  • “This is what I asked for.” — Jeff Van Drew

“Jeff Van Drew can try to talk a big game about protecting Medicaid but New Jerseyans know a liar when they see one. Van Drew’s legacy will always be one of an untrustworthy flip-flopper and here he goes again. Over 1.8 million New Jerseyans rely on Medicaid, which includes a third of all NJ children, and he thinks it’s ‘reasonable’ to gut this program. No, that’s cruelty for the sake of loyalty to Trump and his billionaire backers. Voters of NJ-02 won’t forget next fall that decimating Medicaid was what Van Drew ‘asked for,’” said New Jersey Democratic State Committee spokesperson Glynnis Harvey.
