Ciattarelli, Steinhardt and other NJ GOP Leaders Are Complicit in Trump’s Assault on Democracy
TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey Democratic State Committee is demanding that Republican leaders like Jack Ciattarelli, Doug Steinhardt, Tom Kean, Jr., Jeff Van Drew, Chris Smith, and others immediately speak out against President Trump’s continuing assault on democracy following the publication of bombshell recordings this weekend where he attempts to pressure Georgia election officials to overturn the rightful results of the election. With the inauguration of President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris only weeks away, nearly all prominent NJ Republican officials have been absolutely silent in the face of Trump’s unprecedented attempts to deny reality, suppress votes and reverse the lawful results of the election. Their refusal to address the situation is tantamount to endorsing Trump’s attacks on the rule of law and the principles of democracy that America was built on.
“President Trump’s thuggish and likely law-breaking call once again shows the depths he and every Republican who supports him are willing to sink to in a desperate, pathetic attempt to cling to power after they were soundly rejected by the American people,” said NJDSC Executive Director Saily Avelenda. “By refusing to call out Trump’s reprehensible conduct Jack Ciattarelli, Doug Steinhardt and their fellow Republican leaders show how out of touch they are with New Jersey’s values as they pander to the extreme right to attract the support of Trump’s radical conservative base in the gubernatorial primary. New Jersey has overwhelmingly rejected Trumpism and this sick embrace of undemocratic conduct by Ciattarelli and Steinhardt will never be forgiven or forgotten.”
