The New Jersey Democratic State Committee announced the official formation of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, which is being incorporated into party organization.
(Trenton) – Today, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee announced the official formation of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Caucus, which is being incorporated into party organization.
The LGBT Caucus is focused on assuring that current legal protections of LGBT people of New Jersey are guaranteed into the future, and that the voice of the LGBT community will continue to be heard.
“The LGBT community is integral to the Democratic Party just as its members are integral to families across the Garden State,” said John Currie, Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. “The formation of the LGBT caucus highlights our commitment to our LGBT brothers and sisters in the fight for equal protection under the law.”
“The creation of the LGBT Caucus represents a vehicle for action and inclusion of the LGBT Community within the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. It will give us the tools to make our Party stronger and more open to our loyal Democratic voters. We thank Chairman Currie for his strong leadership, as we acknowledge his predecessors, Joe Cryan and John Wisniewski under whose watch the seeds were planted for this positive change,” said Barbra Casbar Siperstein, a member of the Democratic National Committee Executive Committee.
At a recent Democratic State Committee meeting, New Jersey Democrats voted to include in the party organization’s constitution and bylaws a prohibition against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Prominent elected Democrats celebrated the step toward greater inclusion and applauded the formation of the LGBT caucus.
“LGBT issues are at the forefront around the country, whether it’s marriage, federal rights or adoption. It’s crucial that we have a forum to discuss these important issues. I commend Chairman Currie for his leadership on this front,” said Assemblyman Reed Gusciora.
“Under the leadership of Chairman Currie the LGBT community within the Democratic Party has been able to flourish. Working together we will be able to educate, empower and enlist LGBT Democrats to fight for Democratic values at all levels of government,” said Assemblyman Tim Eustace.
“I believe the organization of this Caucus is extremely important not only for our Democratic Party, but our State as well,” Ed Zippirich, Councilman of Red Bank, New Jersey, said. “We hold an important voice to be heard, and it must be heard directly from us.”
