(Trenton) — Today, New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie applauded President Barack Obama for his executive actions to reduce the scourge of gun violence — important steps that Congressional Republicans have systematically neglected to take.

“It is astonishing that, despite the disproportionately extreme rate of gun violence in America, the Republican Party has refused to make the safety of our communities a priority. Common sense reforms to reduce gun violence have been needed for years, but Republicans continue to put partisan politics above the lives of innocent victims in our communities,” said Currie.

Currie continued, “I applaud President Obama’s announcement today. Unlike our governor, who constantly changes policy positions based on presidential primary politics, the President represents gun reform we can believe in. And I remain as buoyed by his courage and his conviction as I am ashamed by the hateful campaign rhetoric of the Republicans who seek to replace him. I can only hope that Congress, as well as Republican state legislators in New Jersey, will follow his lead, and focus on preventing the deaths that occur because of the gaps in our country’s gun laws.”
