(Trenton) — Today, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee released its draft Delegate Selection Plan for the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

The plan formally describes the processes by which New Jersey Democrats will select delegates and alternates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention, which will be held next year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 25 – 28.
“This is the first step in a complicated and competitive process. But it is one that will result in a diverse crop of New Jersey Democrats marching off to Philadelphia for the purposes of nominating the next President of the United States. That is really exciting,” said John Currie, Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. “We have been successful at nominating candidates who better reflect the make-up of our population, and I am confident that this delegate selection process will do the same.”
The New Jersey delegation must achieve gender balance, and the draft delegate selection plan seeks to encourage participation from African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and other minority groups that comprise New Jersey’s diverse and culturally-rich population. Delegate and alternate positions are apportioned on the basis of turnout in previous elections. And priority consideration is provided to groups that have been historically under-represented in the Democratic Party’s affairs by virtue of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
During the 30-day period, comments, questions, and concerns about the plan may be submitted online, by email, or via postal mail. All comments must be submitted by Tuesday, May 26th by 5:00 PM.
After the public comment period, the plan will be revised, approved by the New Jersey Democratic State Committee’s State Central Committee, and submitted to the Democratic National Convention Committee for review and approval.
New Jersey’s presidential primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
