CRYAN STATEMENT ON SPEAKER ROBERTS
(TRENTON) – Democratic State Chairman Joseph Cryan today issued the following statement in response to Speaker Joseph J. Roberts’ decision not to run for reelection for the New Jersey General Assembly:

“I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Speaker Joseph Roberts.

“Democrats across New Jersey are losing a leader who always set the bar for leading with dignity and class whether serving as chair of the Democratic State Committee, Majority Leader or Speaker of the General Assembly.

“Speaker Roberts has served the people of New Jersey for 34 years and during his 22-year tenure in the Legislature he was able to shepherd through progressive policies that will benefit New Jerseyans for generations to come.

“His legislative accomplishments are numerous but among them it must be recognized that he has been a tireless champion of the issues that have helped some of the most vulnerable New Jerseyans.

“Joe Roberts crafted laws that abolished the death penalty, established needle exchange programs, expanded affordable housing, created programs and services to assist families with a loved one with autism, promoted affordable health coverage and protected property relief for working New Jersey families.

“I wish Joe Roberts continued success and happiness as he begins the next phase of his life.
