Anti-LGBT, Anti-Woman, Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Labor Tea Partier Has Wrong Priorities
(Trenton) – Today, New Jersey Democrats reacted to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s choice of Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate — a decision that suggests Trump is doubling down on the divisive qualities that make him unfit to be president.
“At a time of uncertainty, the last person we need as a Vice President is someone who supports policies that undermine the country's people and our values,” said Chairman Currie. “But that’s Mike Pence in a nut shell — a guy who promotes discrimination against women, members of the LGBT community, and immigrants, and who attacks working people. If you are not a wealthy, white, male religious zealot, Mike Pence will abuse his position to hold you back."
"We need to heal the divisions between us, not deepen them. We need to bridge the chasm between millionaires and working Americans, not widen it. And we need to build on the progress achieved by the Obama administration and move the country forward, not move it backwards. That is why everyone in New Jersey should reject the Trump-Pence ticket, and support Hillary Clinton,” Currie added.
Pence’s ideology is as radical and reckless as the Republican Party platform, which endorsed controversial anti-LGBT "conversion therapy", promoted state laws to limit restroom access for transgender people, and insinuated that children not born to a “natural marriage” would be damaged or drug-addicted.
"Even for the Republican Party, this is just such an offensive choice," said Chris Hillmann, Co-Chair of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee's LGBT Caucus. "I understand why Trump would pass over a failed governor like Chris Christie, who allowed felony conspiracies to blossom inside his inner circle, but it is absurd for him to then choose a different failed governor -- one who backed the legalization of discrimination against the LGBT community. Shame on Trump and Pence, and on anyone who endorses their embarrassingly bigoted Republican platform."
Below are a few highlights of Pence's disastrous record:
• ANTI-LGBT. As Governor, Pence personally spearheaded an anti-LGBT law that legalized discrimination against the LGBT community, alienated businesses, caused boycotts, lost investments and embarrassed his constituents. He was later forced to revise that law, the “so-called” Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
• ANTI-WOMEN. While serving in the House of Representatives, Pence also led the fight to defund Planned Parenthood and fought to pass Indiana's 2016 anti-abortion law, with some of the most outrageous restrictions in the country. One Republican state representative candidly called the bill’s passage, “a perfect example of a bunch of middle-aged guys sitting in this room making decisions about [what’s] best for women.”
• ANTI-IMMIGRANT. He's also a long-time opponent of responsible measures to address the country's broken immigration system, voting repeatedly against comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship.
• ANTI-WORKER. And Pence is no friend to the American worker. He even signed a law allowing skilled workers in Indiana to be paid less.
