Save Our Shore
President Bush / Senator McCain:
The Jersey Shore is too precious and important to our state’s economy to be put in danger of a potentially disastrous oil spill. It’s time we refocus our efforts on conservation and alternative energy sources rather than continue our reliance on oil. Say no to ending the ban on offshore drilling and save our shore! Sincerely, Send your friends an e-card with the following message: Greetings from the Jersey Shore: Stop the McCain-Bush Off-Shore Drilling Plan! Whether you prefer the boardwalk or the beach, the Jersey Shore is a favorite destination for many of us. If John McCain and President Bush get their way though, the Jersey Shore might not be "fun in the sun" much longer. For nearly 30 years the federal ban on offshore oil drilling has protected the pristine natural condition of the Jersey Shore. But now, President Bush, John McCain and the GOP want to end the ban and start drilling for oil and gas off our coast. As the Star-Ledger recently put it, a potential oil spill along the Jersey Shore, "would be disastrous environmentally and economically." State lines don't matter either. If an accident occurred in the waters off the coast of Virginia, it could easily pollute our beaches too. With the Jersey Shore generating more than $35 billion annually in tourism and recreation, that's a risk we just can't afford. John McCain-who opposed offshore drilling during his 2000 presidential campaign-has now caved to Big Oil to support the ruinous policies of the Bush Administration. Ending the ban would provide no relief for high gas prices today or even years from now. It would take at least a decade for oil to start flowing if the ban were ended now-and even then the amount of oil supposedly available is a paltry 16 billion barrels, barely enough to supply us for two years. Meanwhile, the oil industry already has another 68 million acres under lease where there is little current exploration. The Bush-McCain oil-drilling plan is a disaster waiting to happen, would do nothing to assuage our current energy woes and would further deepen our dependence on oil. We need your help to spread the word that John McCain and President Bush are more interested in padding the profits of their oil industry buddies than protecting New Jersey's environment. Tell 5 of your friends, family and colleagues where McCain really stands. |
