Property taxes are eating up a larger share of family income under Gov. Chris Christie than under previous governors, primarily due to a sharp reduction in direct property tax relief over the past two years. In fact, net property taxes are 20 percent higher under Christie than they were when Democrat Jon Corzine left office two years ago.

Flashback to the campaign trail: Christie made vows not to touch pensions or property tax rebates or cut education. Then he did just that as the centerpiece of his first two years. He pledged to make state contributions into the pension fund, then balanced his budget by skipping a $3.1 billion payment. He called Gov. Jon Corzine’s practice of bonding to fill the transportation trust fund “unconscionable,” then did the exact same thing.

In the meantime, as the residency rule was clearly not being enforced in 2011, as state elections officials certified her candidacy last year, and as she subsequently won election by a healthy margin, the proper thing to do would be to let her take office. It would be wrong for the court to ignore the will of the voters here by changing the rules of the game after Election Day, even if they weren’t the wisest rules.
