NJDSC and Chairman Wisniewski Host Education Roundtable
--November 28, 2011--
New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Wisniewski hosted representatives of New Jersey’s education community and constituencies for a roundtable discussion on the state of public education in New Jersey and education initiatives and issues expected to be part of the upcoming legislative debate.
The event was held on Thursday, October 27 at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy in New Brunswick. Roundtable participants were invited to join the discussion and were chosen as representatives of varied constituencies involved in and/or affected by the state’s education policies. Members of the public were invited to observe as well.
Prior to the discussion, participants heard from Dr. David Driscoll, Chairman of the President’s National Assessment Governing Board, past president of the Council of Chief State School Officers and former Commissioner of Education in Massachusetts. Dr. Driscoll discussed his experience in Massachusetts when that state implemented its landmark education reform law. You can see his comments below:

New Jersey’s 2012 Delegate Selection Process
--November 23, 2011--

On September 3, 2012, the Democratic National Committee will kick off the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. As Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, I have the privilege of overseeing the process that will select New Jersey’s 2012 convention delegation and then leading our delegation to Charlotte to re-nominate President Barack Obama.
The Democratic National Convention provides an opportunity for supporters from around the country to gather and celebrate our party, while kicking off our efforts to re-elect President Obama. The nominating convention, held once every four years, gives our party the chance to formally select our standard bearer for the 2012 election and adopt our party platform.
You can View the 2012 Delegate Selection Plan here.
The 2008 National Convention in Denver represented a historic moment, in which the President delivered his acceptance speech before more than 80,000 people at Invesco Field at Mile High. On the floor of that convention, New Jersey was proud to lead with a unified delegation in support of President Obama.
In 2012, delegations will be sent to Charlotte by 56 states, territories and Democrats Abroad. The New Jersey Democratic State Committee is proud to once again participate and is looking forward to bringing our most diverse and representative delegation ever to Charlotte. I am committed to ensuring that our delegation truly reflects the face of New Jersey, and to that end we have set the most inclusive representation goals in our history. These goals represent the commitment of the Democratic Party to increase representation of traditionally underrepresented groups in party affairs and ensure that everyone who wants a seat at the Democratic table has one.

Sincerely,
John S. Wisniewski

Democrats Make History on Election Day!
--November 08, 2011--
To hear Democrats tell the story of Tuesday's election, voters went to the polls to make sure Democratic legislators continue to keep a Republican governor and his attack-style politics under control. "Last night was a clear indication that New Jersey has had enough with Gov. Christie and Republicans who march in lockstep with them," said the state Democratic chairman, Sen. John Wisniewski (D., Middlesex).
Gov. Chris Christie, the bully on the playground, doesn’t have much of a punch after all. And for any bully, exposing that weakness creates grave dangers. Because people stop being scared. And then they start dreaming about how nice it would feel to punch back.
Star Ledger:
“This is like a new version of how low can you go," said Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex), the state Democratic chairman. “They understand this is not their election, and they want to lower expectations. At the end of the day, no matter how low they want to convince you the expectations are, it doesn’t wash.”
Wisniewski stuck to the storyline that the election is a referendum on the governor, nothing more, nothing less. "This election is not about pension and benefit reform, it’s about people paying higher property taxes when they were told they wouldn’t. It’s about people seeing an assault on public education and saying that’s not good. It’s about Chris Christie not being right for New Jersey.”
“Despite national ardor for a Chris Christie presidential run, voters who know him best have not been influenced by his attempt to generate support for Republican legislative candidates,” New Jersey Democratic chairman John Wisniewski wrote. He added that Christie has tipped too far to the right while flirting with a presidential run, a move that he says has turned off New Jersey voters.
With his 2009 election, Christie became the Republican Governor with the most ineffective coattails in the past hundred years and the most ineffective among all Governors since 1940. With only 41.7% of legislative seats won by Republican candidates in 2009, it became the lowest percentage of Republican legislators in a year in which a fellow Republican won the gubernatorial election. Among all the Governors, Christie had the most ineffective coattail effect since Democrat Charles Edison's election in 1940 when 30% of legislators elected were fellow Democrats.
Monmouth Pollster Patrick Murray PolitickerNJ:
It turns out the governor’s definition of history is a bit underwhelming. Basically, if Republicans could hold on to the seats they already have, the election would be historic. To back this up, the state GOP put out a memo showing that the governor’s party has lost legislative seats in the first midterm elections of 7 of the past 8 governors.
Putting aside numerous mathematical errors in the memo, the state GOP doesn’t take into account the fact that the governor’s party usually picks up seats as a coattail effect during the governor’s initial election. In this context, a loss of seats in the midterm can be viewed as something of a course correction. It turns out the governor’s definition of history is a bit underwhelming. Basically, if Republicans could hold on to the seats they already have, the election would be historic. To back this up, the state GOP put out a memo showing that the governor’s party has lost legislative seats in the first midterm elections of 7 of the past 8 governors
Analyzing these two-cycle changes in legislative seats (governor’s election year plus midterm), we find that 4 of the past 7 governors have actually seen their party experience a net gain of seats.

Wisniewski Guest Column: The Right is Wrong On Irene
--September 01, 2011--
Chairman Wisniewski published the following guest column, "The Right Is Wrong On Irene," for the Star Ledger:
When a Republican Governor and Democratic state party chairman find agreement on an issue, as Governor Christie and I do on federal assistance for those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, you would hope our representatives in Washington would take heed. Unfortunately, As New Jersey's residents and communities attempt to recover from the devastation with the welcome assistance of emergency responders from all levels of government, the Tea Party and its Republican allies are, once again, taking advantage of a national crisis to pursue their own narrow political agenda. Worse yet, with every passing day the fringe philosophy that would rather destroy government than fix it is inching its way into the mainstream of Republican thinking.Republican Congressman Ron Paul recently appeared on Fox News claiming Irene wasn’t the real disaster. Instead, he claims that that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the very people providing a helping hand, are the problem.
Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor insists there should be no more federal assistance for disaster relief unless offset by cuts to federal programs that most Americans hold dear, but that his Republican colleagues in the U.S. Congress would rather gut. Sadly, New Jersey Republican Congressman Scott Garrett, a representative of an area devastated by flooding in recent days, has joined him in this call.
Representative Michele Bachmann, who only weeks ago won the Iowa straw poll as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, recently joked that God was sending a message to politicians through natural disasters such as Hurricane Irene. But the people recovering from devastation aren’t laughing.
Unlike most Americans, these representatives and far too many others in positions of responsibility do not believe that government has a responsibility to its people in times of trouble. Instead of focusing on the loss of life, the damaged property and the washed away memories of people up and down the east coast, they are using this disaster to advance their assault on government. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the safety of our families and our homes or America's solid commitment to pay its debts, the right wing, the Tea Party and their cronies are showing, once again, that they will use any crisis to extort their agenda at the expense of working men and women. They are drawing a line in the sand and the line is right in front of people who have just gone through a disaster.
There is a crucial role for government in today's society and it’s not just a place to lay blame.
In Sayreville, where I live, two neighborhoods were devastated by flood waters last weekend. The men and women who suffered this damage work hard, pay their bills – including their taxes – and some answered their nation’s call to duty when it came. Today, they not only need our help, they deserve it.
It’s time to assess the damage done by the high winds, heavy rains and extensive flooding. It's time to harness all the forces of government to do the good we all know it can do. Its time for all Americans to put the destructive rhetoric about government aside and get to work on the critical task at hand - rebuilding our homes, our businesses and our communities.
Defined as the sound uttered by a donkey, the Bray is dedicated to following the Democrats fight to keep New Jersey solidly blue.
