GOP Civil WarJan 7. - GOP infighting has reached a new level this week. The tea party wing of the Republican Party completed a coup by ousting Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer. Greer, the handpicked Chairman of embattled Florida Governor Charlie Crist and an ally of RNC Chairman Michael Steele, was deposed by the extreme right wing of a Republican Party which continues to narrow itself ideologically, demographically and electorally as tea party extremists continue to implement right-wing purity tests and chase moderates candidates from the Party. Even Steele is hedging his bets on the 2010 midterm elections. He questioned whether the GOP is ready to lead and declared that Republicans will not win back a majority in Congress this year. GOP [Hearts] 100 Wall Street LobbyistsDec. 15 - After meeting with lobbyists for banks, hedge funds and the financial services industry, the very industries whose risk and greed nearly sank the American economy, not a single Republican voted to support legislation to stabilize our financial system, enact new consumer protections and implement new rules to curb irresponsible industry practices. The meeting and unanimous GOP opposition to reform is a nod to continued GOP support for the same economic policies championed by the Bush administration that ignored the needs of Main Street and brought our country to the brink of financial ruin. Watch the latest DNC web video slamming GOP leaders for teaming with 100 lobbyists against Wall Street reform: 100 False Claims (and counting)Dec. 8 - Republicans have been far from genuine and truthful in their criticism of health care reform. In fact, GOP Senators have now made more than 100 misleading and outright false claims and statements since debate on the Senate floor began just eleven days ago -- that's nearly ten false claims a day. The video below sheds light on the Senate GOP’s unending lies and Senate Republicans’ efforts to mislead the American people and “kill” health reform at all costs. OFA NEW JERSEY HEADQUARTERS GRAND OPENING Saturday, December 12 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Organizing For America NJ Headquarters 46 Bayard St. Suite 410 New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Corner of George & Bayard, 4th floor Contact: (609) 891-7533 A Victory for VotersThe RNC attempted to dissolve the consent decree which has been in place for nearly three decades barring "ballot security" programs, which are little more than thinly veiled attempts to engage in systematic and illegal efforts to disenfranchise minority voters. The consent decree was the result of litigation brought by the NJDSC and the Democratic National Committee in 1981 to stop Republican voter suppression efforts. In 1987 the ruling was expanded to cover the entire country. Read Chairman Cryan's statement below: NJ DEMS: COURT RULING A VICTORY FOR VOTERS Federal Judge rules against GOP in upholding historic ‘consent decree’ barring voter intimidation and suppression (TRENTON) – Democratic State Committee Chairman Joseph Cryan issued the following statement celebrating yesterday’s ruling by the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey keeping in place the court’s ability to protect voters against Republican intimidation and suppression tactics. Late last year the Republican National Committee (RNC) sought to void the 1981 consent decree which bars the RNC and its state party organizations from engaging in the illegal and systematic disenfranchisement of legitimately registered voters. To read the decision, click here: http://my.democrats.org/page/-/pdf/voter_protection/DNCvRNC_Opinion_12.1.09.PDF. “Yesterday’s ruling is a victory not just for New Jerseyans, but for all Americans who share in the belief that our democracy is based on the fundamental right of every eligible citizen to freely cast their vote. It is disheartening that even in 2009 Republicans would rather engage in illegal efforts to keep minority voters away from the polls than make a concerted effort to attract minority voters to their party. “Thankfully the court has recognized that the consent decree continues to be an important tool ensuring voters’ Constitutionally-protected access to the ballot box. The only reason for the RNC to want to dissolve the agreement would be to engage in the despicable practices the consent decree specifically guards against. “Unfortunately, racial discrimination and Republican efforts to intimidate minority voters are not relics of the Jim Crow era. The fact is nearly each and every election, whether in New Jersey or around the country, the consent decree acts as an important safeguard against Republican attempts to deny voters their hard-won right to freely and equally participate in the electoral process. Even in the 2008 election, Republicans attempted to use lists of people who had lost their homes to foreclosure as a means to thwart the ability of legitimate voters to make their voices heard in the voting booth. “I call on Gov.-elect Chris Christie and RSC Chairman Jay Webber to join me in applauding the court’s decision and to disavow any and all attempts by national Republicans to engage in the dirty tricks and systematic suppression that keep eligible citizens from casting their vote or having it counted.” # # # Sen. Menendez Speaks in Favor of Health Care ReformNov. 24 - Senator Bob Menendez makes the case on the Senate floor for national health care reform that puts patients ahead of the interests of insurance companies. Momentum continues to grow for reform that makes sure Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. CRYAN STATEMENT ON ELECTION OF STEPHEN SWEENEY AS NEXT SENATE PRESIDENT AND SHEILA OLIVER AS NEXT ASSEMBLY SPEAKERNov. 23 - (TRENTON) – Democratic State Chairman Joseph Cryan today issued the following statement as Democrats voted to elect new Leadership in the Legislature: “Congratulations to Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem) on his election as the next President of the Senate and Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex) as the next Senate Majority Leader. I also wish to extend congratulations to my colleague Sheila Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) on her election to be the next Speaker of the General Assembly and thank my colleagues in the Assembly for honoring me as their selection to be as the next Majority Leader. “While today marks a transition period in the Legislature, one thing that is not changing is Democrats’ commitment to the values and principles that are important to all of us so that New Jersey can move forward. “Sen. President-elect Sweeney and Majority Leader-elect Buono have been forceful advocates for the priorities important to New Jersey families and I am confident that they will continue to do so in their new positions. “Throughout her career and her tenure in the Assembly, Speaker-elect Oliver has proven that she has the qualities and vision needed to lead our caucus. As the first African-American woman to become Speaker, her election is an historic one and speaks to the rich diversity of our party and our state.” # # # DNC Chair Tim Kaine on Senate Voting to Begin Full Debate on Health CareNov. 21 - Washington – DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement after the Senate voted to begin full debate of health insurance reform legislation. “Today, the Senate took another historic step on the road to enacting health insurance reform. By clearing this first procedural hurdle, senators will now have an opportunity to debate the health reform bill on the Senate floor and continue to make progress on delivering health insurance reform to the American people. I want to extend my congratulations to Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senator Dick Durbin for their tenacity in bringing the bill to the floor, and thank countless other senators for their commitment to reform as the Senate begins this historic debate. “While unfortunate, it’s not terribly surprising that no Republicans voted in favor of the motion to proceed. Defenders of the status quo have been working to derail reform for months -- unfortunately, their obstructionist, just-say-no tactics represent more of the same. No matter. We know that there are some members of the Republican Party who understand the urgent need for health insurance reform and we remain hopeful that we can continue to work with those members to find common ground on this historic effort to pass health insurance reform that provides greater security and stability to Americans who have insurance and more quality affordable options to those who don’t. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would bring down the skyrocketing costs of care for American families, businesses and our government, and reduce the national deficit $130 billion by 2019. "We've been trying to reform our broken system since Harry Truman was president -- now, we're in the home stretch. This time, President Obama and Congressional Democrats will deliver health insurance reform to the American people.” ### CRYAN STATEMENT ON GOV.-ELECT CHRISTIE SPEECHNov. 19 - (TRENTON) – Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) released the following statement Thursday following Gov.-elect Chris Christie’s speech in Atlantic City: “Gov.-elect Christie may be saying not to expect miracles, but New Jerseyans do expect him to stick to his few specific promises, such as cutting income taxes for all taxpayers and reinstating property tax rebates.” # # # Rudy's Flip FlopsNov. 19 - Watch the latest DNC video detailing former NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s politically-motivated flip-flop on whether suspected terrorists should stand trial in U.S. courts. As recently as 2006, Giuliani supported such trials and argued that they demonstrate “to people what America is like… there’s the law, and we’re going to follow it.” But, this past weekend, and throughout the week, Giuliani has continued to ignore his long-held and oft-repeated support for such trials in his attempt to score political points for the Republican Party. DNC Chairman Tim Kaine on Senate Health Care BillNov. 19 - Washington, D.C. – DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement after Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act this afternoon at the U.S. Capitol. The Act would extend coverage to 31 million people, covering 94 percent of Americans. According to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, the plan would reduce the deficit by $127 billion over the next ten years. “Today we took another historic step on the road to finally delivering health insurance reform to the American people. I want to congratulate Majority Leader Reid, Chairmen Baucus, Dodd and Harkin for their extraordinary leadership, and thank countless other Senators for their tireless work. “The bill achieves the goals President Obama set out at the beginning of this debate. It provides increased security and stability for those who have insurance; more quality, affordable options for those who don’t; and it reins in the high costs of care for American families, businesses and governments. “Yesterday the Congressional Budget Office’s analysis confirmed what President Obama and Congressional Democrats have been arguing for months: we can fix our broken health care system and dramatically extend access to care, without adding a dime to our national deficit. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would extend coverage to 31 million Americans, and reduce the deficit $127 billion by 2019 -- and by as much as $650 billion during the decade after that. The Act includes four key measures that a group of 20 leading health care economists praised just this week, including delivery system reforms and the establishment of an independent Medicare Commission. “The Senate’s bill, like the historic legislation the House of Representatives passed earlier this month, would also crack down on some of the insurance industry’s worst practices – like denying coverage because of a pre-existing condition or canceling someone’s coverage when they get sick. “Teddy Roosevelt started a national conversation about the need to reform our health care system nearly 100 years ago. Now, we’re closer than ever before. As we enter the final stretch, the Democratic National Committee will continue to generate support for reform and continue to hold accountable those who would rather stand with the insurance industry to protect the status quo. Inaction is not an option -- if we do nothing, costs will continue to skyrocket, coverage will continue to erode and millions more will lose their insurance. Democrats won’t rest until we deliver health insurance reform to the American people. " ### Calling out Mitch McConnell on Health CareNov. 19 - In the ninth installment in the DNC's ongoing “Call ‘Em Out” series, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is called out for his delay tactics and distortions throughout this historic health insurance reform debate. As the leader of the Party of NO, McConnell has repeatedly called for ‘slowing down’ urgently needed reforms and offered distortions and scare-tactics in an effort to ‘kill’ reform. House Passes Affordable Health Care for America ActNov. 9 - Saturday’s House vote marked the most significant advancement yet in an historic and on-going effort to reform America’s broken health care system. Because of the hard work put forth by Congressional leadership, the White House and grassroots volunteers across the country, real health reform is now closer than it ever has been to becoming a reality. New York Times “Sweeping Health Care Plan Passes House”: Handing President Obama a hard-fought victory, the House narrowly approved a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s health care system on Saturday night, advancing legislation that Democrats said could stand as their defining social policy achievement. Democrats say the House measure — paid for through new fees and taxes, along with cuts in Medicare — would extend coverage to 36 million people now without insurance while creating a government health insurance program. It would end insurance company practices like not covering pre-existing conditions or dropping people when they become ill. The successful vote came on a day when Mr. Obama traveled to Capitol Hill to make a personal appeal for lawmakers to “answer the call of history” and support the bill. The vote came on the third anniversary of the 2006 Democratic takeover of the House, and the passage moves the bill well beyond the health care overhaul attempted by President Bill Clinton in 1993. For that, I am truly grateful to each and every one of you. Whatever our political differences, I believe that Chris Christie is going to work hard for the people of this state, and I wish the Governor-Elect success, patience, and good fortune as he leads our state forward. He opposes a woman’s right to choose and wants a constitutional amendment to ban abortion. He sides with ultra-conservatives who refuse to fund embryonic stem cell research even though it could cure diseases and save lives. He even sides with the N.R.A in opposing a ban on rifles that fire bullets able to tear through police officer’s bulletproof vest. Corzine Posts First LeadOct 8 - With less than a month to go before Election Day, a new survey conducted for Stan Greenberg and James Carville’s organization Democracy Corps by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research finds that Democratic Governor Jon Corzine has now moved slightly ahead of Republican Chris Christie, after pulling into a statistical dead heat two weeks ago. Corzine now leads by 3 points, garnering 41 percent of the vote to Christie’s 38 percent and independent Chris Daggett’s 14 percent. Importantly, Corzine has now consolidated the vote among his base, crossing the 80 percent threshold among Democrats and winning more Democrats than Christie does Republicans for the first time. Scarborough: “We’ve asked him, and we’ll ask you again Christie. Jon Corzine exactly how he would trim the state's budget. If that was the measure, Christie failed to deliver. And because of that, he now sounds like a man striving not only to unseat Corzine, but also to take the wind out of the sails of Independent Chris Daggett.” http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/state/new_jersey/20091002_ap_analysisnjgovraceturnsonissueofdetails.html WSJ: “If New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie thought he could coast to victory in November on the fact that he's a big Bruce Springsteen fan, he got a reality check this week…The Christie campaign has been largely content-free. "When Mr. Christie doesn't like the truth, he makes up his own version," he said, saying that census data showed a rise in median income in 2008 and that he had restored property tax rebates for many people…But Mr. Daggett, in one of several barbs aimed at Mr. Christie, shot back: "It's easy to criticize when you have no plan of your own. The tooth fairy's not going to solve this problem." http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/02/nyregion/02debate.html - CNN: “Corzine also kept Christie his crosshairs, accusing him of having no concrete plans to fix the state's budget problems. He described the Republican's plans as a "fantasy." "Making tough decisions in a tough environment is what being governor is about," Corzine said. "No plan is not what being a governor is about." Daggett, too, claimed that Christie has not offered a serious plan to fix the state's $8 billion deficit.” http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/10/02/new-jersey-candidates-spar-on-taxes-mammograms - Star-Ledger: "Mr. Christie has no plan. Consider Corzine's first statement in the debate, when responding to Christie's answer. "Let me first of all compliment Mr. Daggett. He has a plan," he said, calling Christie's promises a "fantasy." Daggett was next. "I agree that there's been no plan put forward by Mr. Christie," he said…But what may have been the most stinging line came when he criticized Christie's lack of specificity. Corzine and Democrats during the weekend – making it the largest coordinated grassroots mobilization of New Jerseyans this campaign season. GOP Hands Corzine the ElectionThe last time I witnessed a defining moment this early in a campaign was in 1992 when Pat Buchanan delivered the keynote address to the Republican National Convention and declared a "religious war ... a cultural war ... for the soul of America." New Jerseyans wanted no part of a civil war and, along with most of our nation, rejected the Republican candidate for President, George H. W. Bush, who was tarnished by the anger engendered by Buchanan and the enthusiastic support shown for it by the Republican delegates on national television. Fast forward to 2009 and the anger engendered by some Republican leaders over President Obama's speech to school children urging them to take personal responsibility, work hard and stay in school. Urging parents to keep their children out of school so that they wouldn't be exposed to this message of socialism and, yes, communism, by President Obama exposed the underpinnings of the Grand Old Party. Chris Christie has to wear the GOP mantle in the upcoming gubernatorial election. The right wing of his party just did him more damage than an undisclosed loan to his deputy in the US Attorney's Office, failure to report income on his tax returns, and repeatedly using his position to get special treatment when breaking the law could ever had done. Read more."He Gets It" - Jon Corzine and EducationSept. 8 - If you were governor and the Obama administration offered you $2 billion to help pay for our children's education, would you turn it down? Chris Christie would. That wouldn't just lead to a direct $2 billion increase in property taxes, it would also undercut the real progress we've made in educating our kids. Governor Corzine has made tough decisions to cut spending, but he has never faltered in his commitment to provide all children -- regardless of where they live -- with a high-quality education. Watch the video below to see educators across New Jersey talk about Jon Corzine's commitment to education. REDD: CHRISTIE’S DENIAL OF $2 BILLION IN EDUCATION FUNDS WOULD HAVE DEVASTATING IMPACTS FOR SCHOOLS, CHILDREN, WORKFORCE & ECONOMYSept. 3 – Senator Dana Redd (D-Camden) today joined South Jersey educators and residents to slam Bush Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie for rejecting billions of dollars in federal recovery funds from President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Senator Redd hosted the press conference at the Leadership, Education, and Partnership (LEAP) Academy University Charter School in Camden to highlight Christie’s refusal of $2 billion in federal funding for the state’s education system. The Senator said LEAP Academy was an ideal location for the event in light of yesterday’s announcement by Governor Jon S. Corzine on the significant growth in the number of charter schools and student enrollment in New Jersey. Since 2006, the number of charter schools has increased by 34 percent while student enrollment rose almost 55 percent. “Christie cannot say he is advocating for our children and their future when he has flat-out refused $2 billion in education aid that is critical to New Jersey students receiving a quality education,” said Redd. “Our children deserve the best possible opportunity to acquire the skills they need to enter the 21st century job market. An educated workforce is integral to the health of our state’s economy today and for generations to come. Yet, Christie put politics at the head of the class instead of our children when he decided to refuse critical resources that every child deserves.” Read more.RUIZ/COUTINHO/SPENCER: CHRISTIE REFUSAL OF $2 BILLION IN EDUCATION FUNDS WOULD SHATTER STATE’S EDUCATON SYSTEM, WORKFORCE & ECONOMYSept. 2 – Senator Teresa Ruiz, Assemblyman Albert Coutinho and Assemblywoman Grace Spencer today decried Bush Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie for his rejection of billions of dollars from President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to assist the State in its recovery from the current global economic crisis. Ruiz/Coutinho/Spencer said Christie’s political posturing would have cost New Jersey $2 billion in federal funding for education which prepares New Jersey children for a successful future and ensures the state has an educated workforce and prosperous economy. “Governor Corzine has not been afraid to make tough choices and do what is best for our state,” said Ruiz (D-Newark). “He has led New Jersey through the current global economic crisis by being fiscally responsible while protecting what matters most to New Jersey’s working families like quality education. By investing in early childhood education and providing funding to build new schools, Governor Corzine has proven his commitment to building a strong work force to get our economy back on the right track.” Read more.Assembly members Slam Christie's Rejection of Federal Funds to Help Out-Of-Work New JerseyansAug. 26 - Assembly members Ralph Caputo (D-Belleville), Cleopatra Tucker (D-Essex), Albert Coutinho (D-Essex) and Grace Spencer (D-Essex) today joined local elected officials and unemployed North Jersey residents to take Bush Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie to task for aligning with prominent Bush Republican governors to reject billions of dollars in federal funding from President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Assembly members said that Christie’s refusal of these critical federal funds would have cost unemployed New Jerseyans more than $200 million in funding for extended unemployment benefits. “New Jersey families who are unemployed are struggling to make ends meet, yet Christie would refuse more than $200 million in federal stimulus funding that is a direct lifeline for these families in need,” said Caputo. “Hardworking New Jerseyans who through no fault of their own have already suffered the loss of their job and income deserve support, not Christie’s bloated rhetoric and Bush policies that would have devastating impacts on their future.” Read more.Assembly Dems on New Law Combating Hospital Medical ErrorsSept. 1 - Assembly members Paul D. Moriarty (D-Gloucester), Linda R. Greenstein (D-Middlesex) and Herb Conaway, M.D. (D-Burlington) discuss the enactment of legislation they sponsored to help prevent hospital medical errors. The new law (A-1264/3371/3633) requires the state Department of Health and Senior Services to include hospital-specific data on 14 patient safety indicators in the agency's annual Hospital Performance Report that is available to the public. The law also prohibits hospitals and doctors from billing a patient or insurance company for specific types of medical errors and hospital-acquired conditions. Signed by Governor Jon S. Corzine during a public ceremony at AARP New Jersey Headquarters in Plainsboro, the law takes effect on February 27, 2010. Corzine Closes Gap in New Jersey Goveror RaceAug. 27 - A new survey conducted for Stan Greenberg and James Carville’s organization Democracy Corps by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research shows Democratic Governor Jon Corzine narrowing the gap on Republican challenger Chris Christie in the race for Governor. Christie’s lead has shrunk from five points to two points since our last survey two weeks ago, and he now leads 43 to 41 percent, with independent Chris Daggett taking 7 percent of the vote. The Republican brand continues to be an anchor for Christie in the state. The Republican Party’s favorability rating remains decidedly negative, with just 32 percent of New Jersey voters rating it favorably against 43 percent who give it a negative rating. On the generic state legislative ballot, the Democratic candidates hold an 8-point edge on the Republicans, 45 to 37 percent. Sweeney is a co-sponsor of the new law that Governor Jon S. Corzine signed last Thursday that now requires health insurers in New Jersey to pay for therapy for children with autism-spectrum disorders. “Children living with autism deserve the opportunity to live as fulfilling and independent lives as any one of us,” said Sweeney. “Christie wants to allow insurers to skirt their responsibility to help New Jersey families cover the growing costs of these treatments which are vital to the development of children with autism. He wants to wipe this bill out before the ink is even dry on the Governor’s signature.” Read more.NYT on Christie's No-Bid Contracts"His strategy is vintage Christie: A look at his career shows he has repeatedly used the whiff of corruption as a cudgel against political opponents. But his short-lived attempt to ban no-bid contracts as a freeholder raises questions over whether his zeal for an ethics overhaul is more than just campaign hype and would last if he became governor and met resistance from lawmakers he could not control." The survey shows that Corzine now trails Christie by just 5 points in a three-way race and 6 points in a two-way matchup. Christie leads Corzine 40 to 35 percent, with Independent candidate Chris Daggett attracting 10 percent of the vote. In a two-way trial heat, Christie leads Corzine 43 to 37 percent. As voters learn more about Chris Christie, his negative ratings appear to be rising. His negative ratings are now as high as his positives—32 percent view him favorably, 31 percent unfavorably. Meanwhile, the Republican brand continues to carry negative connotations in New Jersey. The Democratic Party generates a more positive reaction than their Republican counterparts, receiving a favorable-unfavorable rating of 40 to 39 percent compared to a favorable-unfavorable rating of 29 to 43 percent for the Republican Party. Watson Coleman/Greenstein/Lampitt called this yet another attack on women’s health care by Christie who also has committed to restricting the reproductive health choices of New Jersey women. They called Christie’s policies beyond irresponsible, sexist and a setback in the progress made in women’s health care during the last three decades. “Christie’s plan would ultimately repeal state law that enables women under the age of 40 with a family history of breast cancer to receive mammograms paid for by their health insurers,” said Watson Coleman. “In effect, Christie would be leaving millions of New Jersey women without any real health coverage. He is attempting to line the pockets of New Jersey’s health care insurers at the expense of the health of millions of New Jersey women.” Read more.SWEENEY BLASTS CHRISTIE FOR REFUSING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED NEW JERSEYANSJuly 31 - Today, State Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester) blasted Right Wing Conservative Republican Chris Christie for joining with fellow Right-Wing governors Sarah Palin and Mark Sanford in opposing billions of dollars from President Obama’s economic recovery plan, including more than $200 million in extended unemployment benefits. Sweeney was joined by Senator Fred Madden (D-Gloucester), Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Bridgeton) and South Jersey residents at a construction site near the Gloucester County Court House. “Christie’s kneejerk and partisan opposition to accepting over $200 million in extended unemployment benefits is a slap in the face to the thousands of New Jersey families hurt by the global economic recession,” Senate Majority Leader Sweeney said. “If Christie wants to be our governor, he should not be playing partisan political games at the expense of our wallets.” Read more.CRYAN: CHRISTIE PUTS PARTY POLITICS IN FRONT OF NEW JERSEY STUDENTSJuly 30 - Today Assemblyman and Democratic State Committee Chairman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) teamed up with university and college students from across New Jersey to lambaste Conservative Right Wing Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie for his refusal of $74 million in higher education funding from President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Cryan hosted a press conference at Westfield High School to discuss the Conservative Right Wing Republican candidate’s record on education. Cryan and the students assailed Christie’s refusal of critical higher education money calling it a “purely political calculation.” “All week, Christie has boasted to hand-picked audiences about his ‘plan’ for higher education – as usual, he is heavy on rhetoric but light on substance,” said Cryan, chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “Christie can talk all he wants about increasing the availability of grants but he would not even be able to fund existing programs. His rejection of the President’s funding for higher education is simply unconscionable. Christie continues to put his party in front of the people of New Jersey. If he would deny students much needed higher education assistance then how can he possibly market himself as someone dedicated to New Jersey and its future?" Greenwald and Brown called Christie’s approach “fiscally reckless” and said he is using party politics to deny students and small businesses billions in education aid from President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). “Christie’s purely political refusal to accept federal education funding would be a major blow to New Jersey students who are already counting on this assistance to continue their education,” said Greenwald (D-Cherry Hill). “Again, Christie is playing follow the leader with staunch Right Wing Conservatives who are out-of-step with the needs of New Jersey’s working families. When it comes to the role quality education plays in creating jobs to keep New Jerseyans working – Christie doesn’t have a clue.” Read more.COUTINHO & NEW JERSEY COLLEGE STUDENTS BLAST CHRISTIE FOR REFUSING MILLIONS IN STUDENT AIDCoutinho and the students said they held the rally minutes before Christie’s closed forum on higher education to publicly blast Christie for his failure to make higher education a priority. They called Christie’s plan to refuse millions in student assistance “reckless “ and said it was more of Christie’s partisan politics at play because the funding is part of President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “While most New Jerseyans are struggling to make ends meet Christie would refuse $74 million in education aid that would help countless New Jerseyans attain higher education degrees,” said Coutinho (D-Essex), member of the Assembly committees on Budget and Higher Education. Christie Snubs PalinJuly 9 - In a radio interview earlier today, Right Wing Conservative gubernatorial nominee Chris Christie told 101.5 that he would not invite former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to campaign with him. Although Christie said that wants to “focus on what the New Jersey issues are,” he made an exception for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who he hopes would continue to support him. However, he did not mention his upcoming events with GOP Chairman Michael Steele, the multiple campaign events with failed presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney or the negative advertising he continues to accept from South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s Republican Governor’s Association. Christie did not clarify if his refusal to bring Palin in for public visits would rule out future private fundraisers with the former Alaska governor. The Listening Tours are a way to open a dialogue within various communities to discuss ways to organize both effectively and strategically on a wide range of issues. The campaign brought an unprecedented number of new voices into the process. Our goal now is to make sure those voices remain at the center of the debate as the President and Congress move forward to address the challenges we face. To find a Listening Tour by you, please visit: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/listeningtour Reporters agree: Christie should restore his right wing values to his websiteJune 29 - On Reporters Roundtable last Friday evening, Michael Aron of NJN and Michael Symons of Gannett New Jersey agreed that Chris Christie should restore his right wing conservative values to his website. In a discussion of Christie’s right wing conservative values, Symons said that the Christie’s Values Clock “reminds people that [Christie] holds some social opinions that aren’t, you know, overwhelmingly the viewpoint of the New Jersey public and that he’s sorta trying to hide that from you.” Host Michael Aron replied, “So maybe he should put them back up and get rid of one of those two.” “Sure. Exactly,” said Symons. CHRISTIE AND ROMNEY’S EXTREME RIGHT WING AGENDA BAD FOR NEW JERSEY“Chris Christie is kicking off his campaign with a conservative Republican whose extreme right-wing positions couldn’t be more out of touch with New Jersey residents,” said Lautenberg. “Mitt Romney has repeatedly denounced President Obama’s economic recovery package, has declared his opposition to a woman’s right to choose, condemned the President’s selection of Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court and proven himself to be a prime supporter and was a cheerleader for George W. Bush.” As a failed Presidential candidate, Romney opposed stem-cell research, vowed to veto an expansion of children’s health care, and vowed to appoint right-wing justices to the Supreme Court. Like Christie, Romney wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and turn back the clock on women’s rights. Romney has also repeatedly defended President Bush’s failed policies and has boasted of being the “conservative’s conservative.” Read more. What a Week!Dear friends, What a week! Last week was an exciting time to be a Democrat in New Jersey. Then, on Thursday, a packed house at NJPAC in Newark saw a spectacular acoustic performance from Jersey’s own Jon Bon Jovi in support of Governor Corzine. The rock legend played his hits "Who Says You Can't Go Home" and "Livin’ On A Prayer." part of the Step Up! Democratic Women’s Campaign Training held at the Rutgers Labor Education Center in New Brunswick on Saturday. Participants learned valuable tricks of the trade from campaign veterans and elected officials—everything from crafting a message to raising money for a local race—as they geared up for their own campaigns. It was outstanding to hear from women who told me the panelists offered "real life solutions to issues" and that it was "encouraging to hear what others have had to overcome to win office." Tens of thousands of people throughout the state and the country also came together this weekend for the Health Care Organizing Kickoff, hosting house parties in their communities to begin to organize for quality, affordable healthcare for every American. Real reform is now possible, and these events are an opportunity to start the dialogue, building support one block, one neighbor, one conversation at a time. Host or attend a Health Care Organizing event! Watch President Obama’s Health Care Message! I look ahead to many more great events this campaign season and I hope you will join me. Speaking outside Hamilton High West, Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein (D-Plainsboro) and Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D-Hamilton) specifically praised stimulus funding for education. Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, the Democratic state chairman from Union, touted the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, and lifting federal funding restrictions on embryonic stem cell research as Obama's successes. Now, while appearing on This Week with George Stephanopoulos this weekend, Republican Leader John Boehner promised a Republican energy plan that would be just like the Republican budget plan that he and his colleagues offered. GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: So you are committed to coming up with a plan? JOHN BOEHNER: Ah I think you’ll see a plan from us just like you’ve seen a plan from us on the stimulus bill and a better plan on the budget. [This Week With George Stephanopoulos, 3/19/08] Jack Welch Gives Governor Corzine an "A"April 16 - This morning, Governor Corzine appeared on MSNBC's "Squawk Box" to discuss the steps that New Jersey has taken to ensure that middle-class families and the most vulnerable are protected during the recession, while also ensuring that New Jersey families are ahead of the curve when the economy improves. The Governor drew strong praise for his economic assistance and recovery plan -- the first in the nation -- from another guest on the show, Jack Welch, the legendary Chairman and CEO of General Electric, who gave his plan an "A." The Number Zero: Brought to you by the letters G-O-PMarch 31 - Can you guess how many numbers are in the glossy new GOP budget? The answer is zero. As Congress prepares for a crucial vote on President Obama's budget this Thursday, Republican leaders have been plotting an all-out effort to block it without offering a single specific idea of their own. But we can't allow them to obstruct progress with hollow rhetoric. Watch the DNC's new ad exposing the GOP's petty politics and phony budget proposal. Christie's "potential pay-to-play scandal?"However, the Gloucester County Times writes that Christie has brushed off the “potential pay to play scandal.” According to the AP: Former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie took $23,800 in donations this year from principals of Stern & Kilcullen of Roseland and their spouses, according to Election Law Enforcement Commission records. The contributions were matched 2-to-1 through public financing, bringing the total donation to $71,400. Democrats have called on Christie to return the funds from the UMDNJ monitor. On Wednesday, Senator Loretta Weinberg called for Christie to give back the $24,000 in donations, saying “Mr. Christie has said time and again that this type of behavior is unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Rep. Frank Pallone has introduced legislation in Congress to increase oversight of the monitoring agreements between U.S. attorneys and companies accused of wrongdoing. Pallone has long been critical of Christie’s use of deferred prosecution agreements following Christie’s awarding of a no-bid federal monitoring contract to his former mentor John Ashcroft. "This was the concern we've had all along," said Pallone. "He chooses his friends to be the monitors with the idea he would run for governor and go back to his political friends to raise money for his campaign." GOP: The Party of No IdeasMarch 26 - This morning House Republicans unveiled their alternative to President Obama’s budget. Surprise, surprise; just like their colleagues in Trenton, Washington Republicans spent most of their time criticizing the President and offered few specifics in their response. The lone proposal: a massive tax cut for the wealthy. DNC National Press Secretary Hari Sevugan responded: "I'm all for changing the way we do business in Washington, but proposing a 'budget' that doesn't use numbers may be too much for me. After 27 days, the best House Republicans could come up with is a 19-page pamphlet that does not include a single real budget proposal or estimate. There are more numbers in my last sentence than there are in the entire House GOP 'budget.'” MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer was equally infuriated by the GOP’s lack of specific policy proposals. Watch as she calls out the Party of No Ideas: “Give me some substance!' Pallone slams Christie on rejection of federal stimulus fundsOne day after GOP gubernatorial candidate Christopher Christie said that he would not accept funding from President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-Long Branch) said that Christie should "stop playing politics and start providing solutions." "While Governor Corzine and the New Jersey congressional delegation fight to make healthcare more affordable, to create opportunities for school construction, and to make New Jersey a leader on green technology, Chris Christie and the Party of No, continue to obstruct these efforts," Pallone said. "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has provided a great opportunity for New Jersey during one of the worst economic situations in our history." GOVERNOR CORZINE SAYS HOMEOWNER ASSISTANCE NECESSARY FOR A NATIONAL ECONOMIC RECOVERY“We’re here today to discuss the housing crisis – perhaps the worst housing crisis in the nation’s history,” Governor Corzine said during the Office of Thrift Supervision Housing Conference in Washington. “It’s a crisis that has shaken our country to the core as we grapple with how we allowed more than two million homeowners and their families to be evicted, literally scrambling for shelter, deprived of their fundamental right to shelter. “And it’s not just the worst housing crisis in American history, it’s the root of the current economic freefall that has erased so much of our nation’s wealth that was accumulated over the past decade.” As such, Governor Corzine said, a federal program needs to be implemented to address the housing crisis – or risk driving the nation even deeper into recession. Such a program must keep homes affordable and keep families in their homes, thus preserving local communities and their economies. John McCain: Double-Talk Express on the EconomyCountry first or McCain first? As Wall Street falters and the economy continues to collapse, John McCain dangerously played politics by “suspending” his campaign, just days after declaring that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.” After Democratic and Republican leaders reached a bipartisan agreement on Thursday to address the economic crisis, John McCain—who had yet to find time to read Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson’s original two-and-a-half page bailout proposal—swooped in to offer a new proposal that does nothing to enhance protections for taxpayers and homeowners, provide independent oversight or hold CEO’s accountable. In other words, McCain is offering more of the same failed policies—less regulation and tax breaks for big business—that led to this economic meltdown in the first place. Go Democrats!!! McCain + Bush = Job LossesMcCain’s even put the interests of his lobbyist pals ahead of American jobs. He and his campaign manager Rick Davis had a role in a DHL deal that may cost 8,000 jobs in Ohio. McCain used his position in the Senate to hold up the deal while Davis actively lobbied members of Congress to support the deal. To read more about how McCain supports deals that harm American workers and more on the impact of failed Bush-McCain economic policies on American jobs, go to the "100 Days, 100 Ways" web site. Save the Jersey ShoreLast month, John McCain came to New Jersey to talk about how much he loves the environment. But now he wants to put the natural beauty of our Jersey Shore at risk, all for a few barrels of oil. McCain has caved-in to Big Oil and endorsed President Bush’s plan to open up the Jersey shore to oil drilling. In New Jersey Democrats, Republicans and Independents all agree on the need to protect the pristine natural condition of the Jersey Shore.Join us in sending John McCain and George Bush an E-Postcard from the Jersey Shore to tell them to keep their Big Oil buddies off our shoreline. Click here to watch The REAL McCain: Big Oil Fuels the Straight Talk Express New DemocratsGreat news! We’re just now getting some hard numbers back illustrating how many new Democrats we have in New Jersey and they’re turning out better than we thought!According to our latest numbers, we’ve added over half a million newly declared Democrats! Our registration advantage went from about 240,000 (roughly 1.07 million Democrats to 830,000 Republicans) to 600,000 (roughly 1.6 million Democrats to 1 million Republicans). These are amazing numbers that show we are the party of change and people are sick and tired of the GOP and won’t allow a third Bush term under John McCain. Now, only two of our thirteen Congressional Districts have more registered Republicans than Democrats. Before these updated numbers, all 6 Republican held districts had an advantage. Those two remaining districts won’t hold that advantage for long if we keep working hard. George Bush and John McCain have consistently fought against crucial SCHIP legislation and in so doing have put healthcare at risk for tens of thousands of New Jersey children. New Jersey Will Move Into The Forefront With Family Leave Insurance'A true victory for families that builds on our legacy of workers' rights and makes New Jersey a leader on Family Leave Insurance. Earning a living and caring for a family member should not be mutually exclusive.' -Governor Jon S. CorzineWhen Governor Jon S. Corzine follows through on his commitment to Family Leave Insurance by enacting a law that supports employees in caring for the critical needs of family members he will - once again - advance New Jersey into the forefront on a key national issue. California and Washington State are the only other states to adopt family leave. This is an issue and an accomplishment with a clear partisan contrast. It took the leadership of Governor Corzine, Senate President Codey, Assembly Speaker Roberts, Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney, Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman and other Democrats to overcome a decade of entrenched resistance to the ability to care for critically ill family members or to meet other family emergencies. "The Republican Party wants people to think it is the 'family values' party, but it's the Democrats who have succeeded with policies that actually 'value the needs of families'. Some have labeled New Jersey's policy leadership 'progressive,' but I would simply say we are 'making progress' on issues of importance to working families." Democratic Party Leader Joe Cryan Click to ContinueLet's say No to a third Bush termThe John McCain of 2008 is a far cry from the maverick challenger of 2000. After losing to George W. Bush and his cronies in the Republican Presidential Primary in 2000, John McCain decided ‘If you can’t beat ‘e…join ‘em’. He has spent the past 8 years cozying up to right wing ideologues who have taken this country in the wrong direction. Whether it be changing his stance on Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, disregarding the spirit of his own McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill or now kissing the rings of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell who he called ‘agents of intolerance' in 2000.You can see many of these conversions yourself at a website with the first debates of the 2008 Presidential Election. The catch is that it is McCain debating himself. The GOP's Candidate Casting CallIf the GOP Doesn't Believe In It's Own Candidates, How Can The voters?Zimmer? Poor Republicans, they can’t find any quality candidates who want to run for US Senate. Their latest candidate, DC Lawyer/Lobbyist Dick Zimmer already lost a race for US Senate and four years later lost a congressional race. It is just more proof that everyone knows this state and country are committed to ending the Bush Republicans’ reign in Washington once and for all. Bad News Bush Comes To New JerseyBad News Bush & The Bad News EconomyThe bad news on the economy just keeps on coming and today the man to blame is coming to New Jersey. Almost every economic fact of life is going bad and economists say the recession will likely get worse. George Bush, the Republicans in Congress and the Republican agenda couldn't have done more harm to the economy and to the economic well being of mainstream Americans if they tried. In seven long years the country's huge surplus has been turned into an even larger debt; George Bush and the Republicans couldn't have done more harm if they tried. George Bush At A Debt Counseling Agency?! Now George Bush is coming to visit a debt-counseling agency?! That's like bringing Dr. Kevorkian in to work as an emergency room doctor. Where Are NJ Republicans? Will They Stand With & Speak For The People? Or, Will They Run & Hide? Undoubtedly, the New Jersey Republican Congressional incumbents who were part of the Bush agenda will have "scheduling conflicts" today and won't join with the President. It's not good enough to dodge Bush photo-ops. It's not good enough to allow partisan political loyalties to muffle their voices. Just trying to "run out the clock" on the Bush Administration will do nothing productive. Turning their backs in silence on Bush, failing to challenge him, is essentially the same as turning their backs in silence on working people. The Best Way To Bring The Bush Era To An End - Elect Democrats The President's visit is a poignant reminder that the best way to bring the Bush era to an end and the best way to restore economic health, economic opportunity and economic fairness is to elect as many Democrats to as many offices as possible. We're going to need them all to undo the damage Bush and the Republicans done. Denver 2008To get more information about the Democratic Convention in Denver click here. Dems = Middle Class Economic Relief / GOP = 4 More Years of Bush RecessionThe Drum Major Institute, a leading Middle Class Economic Policy Think Tank issued report cards recently on members of Congress. The entire New Jersey Democratic Congressional delegation gets top grades (straight As) on the issues of importance to the middle class. The legislation used to grade them: ten pieces of legislation in the House and ten in the Senate. The active support of Democrats who are working and fighting for the American middle class is especially important now that we are bringing an end to the Bush era. George Bush and the Republicans who support his policies - including John McCain and the Republicans in Congress - have pursued economic and social policies that have done real harm to mainstream America. The best way to bring an end to the Bush era is to elect a Democrat as President and to support Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. Since the event was held in the middle of the afternoon we fear that some New Jerseyans may miss George Bush assurances that John McCain would continue the Bush Administrations failed economic and foreign policies. As a public service we've posted a video of the press conference for voters to see. "And he's goin (sic) to be the president" -George W. Bush That's what President Bush declared as John McCain accepted his endorsement in Washington. You can watch the whole video here John McCain said during the press conference, "I intend to have as much possible campaigning events together ... I look forward to the chance to bring OUR message to America" That sums up the stakes in this years election, do you want to continue the Bush presidency through his surrogate John McCain, or do we need to have higher aspirations as a nation. When John McCain was asked what he thought about the voters’ clear desire for Change, he let President Bush answer for him and said he didn’t have anything to add. We need your help to bring about the change in this country that President Bush, Dick Cheney and John McCain are afraid of. McCain let slip the real reason he's decided to abandon his former maverick self and fall in line with the Bush administration and its benefactors like huge oil companies, Halliburton and the rest of the failed Republican establishment in Washington; "I'll be pleased to have him (George W Bush) with me both from raising money and the much needed finances for the campaign" That’s why we need your help today; please take the time to contribute to help us end the Bush administration on January 20th, 2009, not January 20th, 2013! Any amount will help us fulfill this country’s desire for a new direction in the White House. In addition to the presidential race, New Jersey is going to play a key role in the make up of the next congress. We have two top targets in the state with John Adler and Linda Stender both running for open Republican congressional seats. With your help we can fund a strong coordinated statewide campaign to deliver the state to the Democratic Presidential nominee and increase New Jersey’s Democratic congressional delegation from 7 out of 13 to 9 out of 13. Please contribute We know these campaigns are going to be won by going door to door, so if you haven’t already signed up to be a neighborhood leader please do so now. CorzineThe budget represents a "turning point" in the fiscal management of our State, a turning point away from the patterns of overspending and tortured borrowing that burden the taxpayers, and a turning point toward spending restraint and spending cuts that genuinely address our financial emergency. In fact, his proposal asks for the second-largest cut in spending year-to-year of any budget in New Jersey history…and for only the fourth time since 1951, the budget will be reduced compared to the budget signed the previous year. For the second year running, the Governor’s budget contains no new taxes of any kind…while it again increases net property tax relief. Of course, “flat funding” doesn’t mean no cuts, “flat funding” means cutting $2.2 billion just to keep at last year’s level. In light of the ongoing economic downturn, revenue estimates aren’t strong enough to support even last year’s expenditures. As a result, the Governor cut another $500 million. To achieve the spending cuts this budget delivers, the Corzine Administration began by prioritizing and protecting the core responsibilities of government, such as: educating our children, providing for public safety, caring for the most vulnerable, and with New Jersey’s families under financial pressure… sustaining middle-class property tax relief. Spending is down in every department of the Executive Branch; this is the first time this has ever occurred. In total, there are over $350 million in savings directly attributable to a smaller State government. With this budget the Corzine Administration will have eliminated 5,000 total government jobs at a minimum. The financial restructuring the Governor put forward had four elements because it will take more than spending cuts to cure the broken finances of our State. First, he is getting state spending under control. Second, he is making sure that future spending matches revenue. Third, he will stop out-of-control borrowing. And fourth, he will reduce our crushing debt load and fund infrastructure investments. In terms of debt reduction and long-term fiscal reform, it is not enough to just reject the toll road proposal. Those who don’t like that alternative, should put forward another viable approach to take debt off the books and fund transportation improvements. Governor Corzine has lived up to his commitment to be accountable and honest in his actions, and the way he approaches problems. The state has spent too much money and we carry far too much debt. These twin problems are a threat to the state's financial health and to our future well being. Governor Corzine’s budget and his financial restructuring plan are part of a significant undertaking to fix our financial problems for this year and for the years to come. Delegate Selection ProcessThe February 5th primary elected 70 delegates and 12 alternates in 20 Delegate Districts. Read MoreJersey's proud momentFrom the Star Ledger:Last week, New Jersey regained its place among progressive states when it abolished the death penalty. It took both Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate and the Assembly to make the decision, which was heart-wrenching for many. But it was the right one. Gov. Jon Corzine signs the bill today. Men who had voted in 1982 to reintroduce the death penalty -- such as Senate President Richard Codey -- and officials -- such as Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio -- who prosecute murderers said the time had come to recognize that the death penalty was not good public policy. Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts put it best: "It is simply not for us to decide who should live and who should die." In an era of polarizing, partisan politics, the men and women of New Jersey's Legislature rose above the mire to do the right thing. Governor Corzine Stands Tall: On Policy & PrincipleAs Tom Moran of the Star Ledger wrote: "...the governor was on his game, relaxed and articulate. He's finally made the big decisions on how to fix the state's finances, and he seemed to be at peace. When he said he is willing to fight to the death to get it done, he sounded like he meant it." Read Moran's column Here The Governor, a former Chairman of Goldman Sachs, the prestigious Wall Street investment firm, stressed the importance of substantially reducing state debt. His plan, when finished, will be devoted almost entirely to debt reduction. As the Bergen Record reported: "Corzine said his plan would slash $16 billion off the state's $32 billion in bonded debt, a burden that averages out to $3,700 for every resident. He said the state's fiscal outlook is even bleaker because of an additional $75 billion dollars from under-funded pension payments and medical benefits for retired state workers. "We will get one chance at serious financial restructuring, and it has to be done right," he said." Read the full story here Underscoring his commitment to fiscal reform - as well as his political courage - the Governor said the state's financial future is more important than his personal political future. As Gannett reported: "It's time for we elected officials to stop being afraid and cautious and do something bold to right the ship," Corzine said. He later added: "I'm willing to lose my job if that's necessary to set our fiscal house in order." "Along with paying down debt, Corzine said, his plan will provide permanent funding for transportation needs and will include new restrictions on state borrowing." Read the full story here The Governor said that in addition to cleaning-up the financial mess of the past, he wants to put preventive reforms in place. As the Star Ledger reported: "Calling for "transformational change" in the state's finances, Gov. Jon Corzine said yesterday his plan to raise tolls and pay down state debt will include new limits on future borrowing so New Jersey does not repeat "the mistakes of the past." The "most important structural reform" he will propose, Corzine said, will "create greater public control over future debt as a means of protecting taxpayers from the mistakes of the past." Read the full story here The Governor also spoke to the need for leadership on the state's future. As he said: "The point is the citizens of New Jersey have every right to demand, that we public officials, put our fiscal house in order so we are partners in their success, not a burden to their future. To that end, I hope you will be prepared to join me, with an open mind and a seriousness of purpose that will enable us to take on, and overcome, these challenges. If we do, there is no question, New Jersey’s best days lie ahead." There were many highlights over the three days of the conference, one of which included the 50-plus college students who participated in the New Generation Training Program. Chairman Joe Cryan was one of the many elected officials who spoke to this group, providing encouragement and insight on the rewards of being a public servant. Another highlight was having Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton speak to the crowd of 1,000 attendees. Her presence reminded us all of the important role New Jersey has in the Presidential Primary. Yet the greatest part of this year's conference was the amount of resources that were provided.
