(Trenton) -- John Currie, Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, issued the following statement of condolences on the passing of D. Bilal Beasley, an Essex County Freeholder, former councilman, Irvington Democratic Chair, and his longtime friend:

"To the family and friends of D. Bilal Beasley, I want to express my deepest condolences for his passing. We knew each other for many, many years and I will miss working alongside him as we championed the causes of New Jersey's less fortunate."

"For decades, Mr. Beasley served the people of Irvington Township and, more broadly, Essex County. He definitely earned his place in the New Jersey Municipal Legislators Hall of Fame."

"Much of Mr. Beasley's work centered on the need to improve housing and encourage redevelopment. He understood the importance of basic services, including food and shelter, to the dignity and success of his constituents, as highlighted by his work on the Newark Housing and Redevelopment Authority and as a Commissioner of the Irvington Housing Authority. And when he wasn't helping put roofs over people's heads, as a partner in his family's successful shoe care business, he was literally putting shoes on their feet."

"My friend, Mr. Beasley was also involved in countless civic activities, and his passing creates a hole in the community that will be difficult to fill. Like many, I respected D. Bilal Beasley's work and I mourn his loss. I hope Democrats across the state will join me in remembering a great man, and sending their thoughts and prayers to Mr. Beasley's family and all those who were close to him."
